10 Teams to Debut at the 2019 Boras Baseball Classic of Arizona


With the competition heating up the16 elite Southwestern teams are set for the 3rd Annual Boras Baseball Classic of Arizona Championship Title.

Newport Beach, CA, October 31, 2018—The Boras Foundation today announced the 16 teams competing in the 2019 Boras Baseball Classic of Arizona.  

The Boras Classic will feature16-elite teams from four surrounding states to name a Southwest Championship team. Games begin March 13, 2019 at host schools Corona del Sol and Arcadia High Schools. 

“With the third Arizona Classic set we are looking forward to our strongest field yet,” said Scott Boras, Director of The Boras Family Foundation. “This years lineup features top talent from four states and is sure to be one of the best years in Classic history. Being able to offer a platform for these athletes to showcase their talents to collegiate coaches and MLB scouts is why we created this tournament and we are excited to host 10 new teams.” 

The 2019 Classic is host to:

    • Returning two-time defending Boras Classic of Arizona Champions Basic Academy (NV)
    • Three 2018 State Champions 
    • Two Nationally ranked teams by Baseball America 
    • 14 participants from the 2018 Area Code and Area Code Underclassman Games
    • 44 players committed to Division l Universities
    • 21 players ranked in the Top 500 of their class by Perfect Game, including 10 players in the 2019 class

New editions to the Boras Classic of Arizona, include 10-time Arizona State Champions Chaparral High School, boasting 25 players selected in the MLB Draft since 2000. Local heavy-weights Horizon High School producing five Major Leaguers since 2002, and Mesquite High School led by seniors TJ Clarkson (LHP/1B, Utah) and Davis Heller (RHP/1B, Oklahoma).  Ranked 20th by Baseball America, Nogales High School enters the Classic as the Arizona 4A State Champions along with Hamilton High School who produced 2017’s National League Rookie of the Year Cody Bellinger and won back-to-back Arizona 6A State Titles.   

Making their debut to the Classic from the Southwest are Cottonwood (UT) returning nearly their entire 25-win team including six players named 1st or 2nd team All-5A Utah, perennial powerhouse Bishop Gorman (NV) bringing top rated players in each of the next three draft classes and producing recent 1st round picks in Joey Gallo and Cadyn Grenier.  Rounding off the teams from the Southwest are 4th ranked Mountain Vista (CO) finishing a championship season bringing Colorado’s Player of the Year Sam Ireland (3B/RHP, Minnesota). 

Boras Classic returning teams include Liberty High School leading with senior Chandler Murphy (RHP, Arizona) ranked #180 by Perfect Game, Legend High School (CO) that includes a trio of players ranked in the Top 500 in their class by Perfect Game and Mountain Pointe High School who features top two rated players in Arizona’s 2020 class in Ethan Long (RHP/3B, Arkansa) and Carson Tucker (SS, Texas). 

Co-hosts, Corona del Sol returns most of their team from a 22-win season in 2018, including five Division l commits in seniors Brain Kalmer (3B, Arizona State) ranked #454 by Perfect Game and Daniel Sotelo (New Mexico State), juniors Hunter Haas (SS, Oregon State), Bryan Webb (LHP, Grand Canyon) and Cade Verdusco (OF, Grand Canyon). Arcadia also returns Ryan Bolden (Jr., LHP), Crew Edwards (So., SS) and Carter Hain (So., 3B).     

The 16 high school teams participating in the Classic are guaranteed four games with the championship game slated for March 16th, 6 p.m. at Arcadia High School. The Boras Baseball Classic tournament bracket will be made available in its entirety in early 2019.
